Wake & Wade: Bug’s No Bake Energy Bites

Quietness, solitude, crisp air, and hungry trout are just a few reasons to set your alarm earlier than usual and hit the road down to water. Fortunately for me—I’ve almost always been a morning person. With the exception of a brief period of time during my teenage years. With those years far behind—now, every day between 5 – 6am I jump out of bed, start the coffee and pack up my fishing gear. Morning lark or night owl—any avid angler knows that the wee hours before the sun makes its appearance present some of the best angling opportunities.

With the current state of much of the western United States, now, more than ever it is our responsibility as anglers to protect our fisheries. This means waking up early, carrying a thermometer and getting off the water before temperatures reach dangerous levels for our fish.

 I’m positive most of you have probably seen recipes of these bites before but I took this one straight from my mama. She was ahead of her time with these filling and energizing bites and whipped up the first batch over 10 years ago. I took her recipe and altered it just a tad.

 The best part is these come together in under 10 minutes. Ideal for an early morning, when your anxious to get on the water and don’t have time for a proper breakfast. They are also great to carry in your pack and whip out as a mid-morning snack. 

Ingredients:

 Chocolate chips

Honey

Coconut Flakes

Chia Seeds

Crushed up yogurt covered pretzels

Peanut Butter

Oatmeal

At home:

1.     Just one step! Mix all the ingredients together and flash freeze for 5 – 10 minutes. Pack em’ up to go in your pack.
